Importance of having a good boss
To have a good boss, especially at your first job, is one of the most important factors and you should definitely pay attention. It is him, who will influence you, who will set an example and who will form your personality.
Thomas Morgan, the American geneticist, set perfect examples. Thanks to the friendly and wide open atmosphere in his laboratory it was not only him, who was very successful but also his students. In 1933 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine, he shared this award with his students Alfred Sturtevant and Calvin Bridges. Hermann Joseph Müller, student of Thomas Morgan, gain the Nobel Prize for himself in 1946.
Set up the priorities before the job interview, do not put money, environment or name of the company above everything and pay attention to your potential boss. The true is that you will not get known your boss well during the interview, but you will have a lot of opportunities during your stay in the company. As already mentioned the role of the boss is crucial especially for your first job. The good boss will teach you the right work habits and show you the know-how, very key for your future career.
Qualities of a good boss:
Interview´s attendance – thing number 1, you might take it for granted, but it is definitely not. By attending the job interview the boss is showing his interest in you.
Respectful behavior – the goal of being boss should not be to set himself up. It can be a sign of low self-confidence and if he is showing off already during the interview he will certainly continue while working for him.
Respect for his own boss – not good if the boss is talking poorly about his boss, there is a big risk that he will be disloyal also to his own team.
Well informed – be well aware of the strategy of the company and be able to describe the product is absolutely fundamental. Good boss does not need to know all the products in small details but he needs to know the basics.
Be fair – the boss has control over the employees and has to take crucial decisions it means that he can not always be the good guy. The responsibility of the whole team sometimes requires to be strict and to show who is the boss. The chosen way has paramount importance.
No intrigues – you can see signs of intrigues already during the interview, while being unfriendly, cavalier, without emotions. Leaving the interview without any positive feedback and a few hours later HR calls you to offer you the job because the boss was so excited.
Good reputation - listen to your colleagues about what they say about your boss. It is kind of unwritten rule that the boss is always the worst but even the boss can have a good reputation if he plays fair, is open and honest, friendly and is able to appreciate the job of his employees.
